Optik-Med Eye Surgery

One of the largest laser clinics in Europe, with more than 77.000 treated patients. The Eagle Eye Treatment® can correct hidden refractive errors that not even the best glasses, contact lenses and traditional laser devices are able to correct. After the Eagle Eye Treatment®, you can have better vision than you would have with glasses, for a lifetime. With 3 laser devices ILC Hungary offers the most advanced laser surgery in the industry.

PRK

Superficial treatment for patients between 18 and 65 years. The first PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy) surgery was performed 25 years ago in the US. This treatment has been popular at OPTIK-MED Eagle Eye Clinic for 15 years, and is always performed using the latest lasers. Currently patients are treated with the Allegretto Wavelight laser. Procedure is using one laser: the flying spot laser modifies the surface of the cornea, and then the epithelization begins. After the treatment, there may be foreign body sensation for 2 to 3 days. 5 to 6 days of rest and eye drops for 6 months is needed.

FEMTO

(IntraLasik) – flap treatment for patients between 18 to 65 years. FEMTO (IntraLasik) is currently the most advanced laser treatment in the world, employing the most expensive laser equipment. The Eagle Eye Clinic has been using this treatment for 8 years, and the number of such treatments is increasing. The secret of its success is the fact that no discomfort is involved and recovery is extremely fast. Procedure is using two lasers: the femtosecond laser creates a protective flap, and underneath the flying spot laser modifies the cornea in an insensitive area. After treatment no pain, 1 day rest, eye drops for 3 weeks, and back to work the next day.

LBV

Laser Blended Vision treatment for patients between 45 to 65 years. Laser vision improvement has been making people free from glasses for decades, but reading glasses could not be forgotten, until the LBV® (Laser Blended Vision) treatment appeared. This novel laser treatment has been successfully used in London for 8 years, and at OPTIK-MED, for 2 years. FEMTO (IntraLasik) treatment, which gives back both distant and near vision. It frees you from reading glasses, and bifocal and multifocal glasses for life. After treatment no pain, 1 day rest, eye drops for 3 weeks, and back to work the next day.

Eligibility

The latest ophthalmic technology will be used: Carl Zeiss and Alcon equipment. What should you expect at the assessment?

  • You should prepare for a completely painless assessment that takes 1.5 to 2 hours
  • The most important parts of the assessment are performed by two independent experts
  • Refractive errors of your eyes are measured with 5 different methods
  • The expected result of the treatment will be handed to you in a personal written medical warranty certificate
  • The eligibility assessment generates tens of thousands of data to plan the ideal treatment

For the assessment

  • You should not wear soft contact lenses for 4 to 5 days before the assessment, and semi-rigid and hard contact lenses, for 2 weeks before the assessment, for accurate assessment results
  • Ladies should avoid wearing make-up, especially mascara
  • Before the assessment, you may eat and drink freely (non-alcoholic drinks only)
  • Bring along your previous eye evaluations and glasses
  • It is important to bring along your identification card

List of evaluations you should expect:

  • Refractive power measurement
  • Measuring primary and secondary refractive errors
  • Measuring higher-level, hidden refractive errors
  • Measuring the diameter of the cornea and the pupil
  • Measuring eye pressure
  • Evaluation of stereoscopic vision
  • Creating a relief map of the cornea
  • Measuring the thickness of the cornea
  • Measuring the curvature of the cornea
  • Measuring subjective correction
  • Finding the dominant eye
  • Slit lamp exam
  • Measuring the tear production of the eye
  • Evaluations after pupil dilation
  • Evaluation of the lens of the eye
  • Evaluation of the back of the eye

Surgery

The best routine and experience after more than 77.000 patients. What should you expect?

  • You should prepare for a painless procedure at the clinic that takes 1.5 to 2 hours
  • When you enter the prep room, you will get an anxiolytic and anesthetic eye drops
  • You do not have to do anything in the operation room, only sit comfortably and gaze ahead
  • The treatment lasts 2 to 3 minutes for PRK, and 8 to 10 minutes for FEMTO (IntraLasik)
  • After the surgery, you will immediately experience clear vision

How should you arrive?

  • Come wearing a pair of 100% UV filtering sunglasses (the level of UV filtering can be checked at the clinic), or buy a pair right at the clinic
  • You should not wear soft contact lenses for 4 to 5 days before the treatment, and semi-rigid and hard contact lenses for 3 to 4 weeks
  • Bring along the warranty certificate received after the elig. ass.
  • Eat as regularly, but do not drink alcohol and caffeine
  • Ladies should avoid wearing make-up and perfume
  • Tell your doctor if you have taken any drugs on the day of the surgery

In the operation room: You do not have to be afraid that you may inadvertently blink during the procedure. This will be made impossible by a tiny device the doctor will put in place after the administration of the anesthetic eye drops. The patients usually do not even notice anything. You also do not have to be afraid that you make any other mistakes during the treatment. The procedure does not require the patient to do anything else than keep their gaze on a given point of light. If there is any problem, the treatment can be stopped and then restarted and continued.

Recovery

Medical instructions:

  • Make sure you rest (for 1 day after FEMTO and 5 or 6 days after PRK)
  • Use eye drops as instructed
  • Avoid dusty or smoke-filled placed in the first month
  • No water should touch your eyes for a month (sauna and steam baths are not recommended either)
  • No eye-makeup for 2 wks after PRK, for 4 wks after FEMTO (IntraLasik)
  • The use of sunbeds is to be strictly avoided for 3 to 6 months
  • Ear sunglasses outside that filter 100% of UV light if it is sunny (for 2 months after FEMTO (IntraLasik), and 6 months after PRK)
  • Come to scheduled follow-up examinations

To be careful about: There is nothing special to be careful about after recovery. Giving birth the natural way is just as possible as before the treatment. All kinds of sports and efforts are allowed, just like before. A year after the laser treatment, it is difficult even for ophthalmologists to detect signs of the procedure. Even with special technology, it is difficult to determine if your eyes are good because you were born this way or you had a laser treatment.

Why do you need eye drops? The cornea has repair cells performing a very important biological task. If the eye is damaged (for example it gets hit by a branch), repair cells get to work immediately, and do everything they can to restore the original, pre-damaged state. However, repair cells detect laser treatment as damage, and after the surgery, they immediately summon their forces to restore the pre-operative state – essentially, the cornea with the refractive error. In order to avoid this, you will have to use the prescribed eye drops. Very rarely, repair cells are somewhat successful, even if the eye drops are consistently used, so instead of the 8-diopter  improvement you have been promised, the improvement will only amount to 7 diopters. This is the situation that is covered by the medical warranty. In these cases, OPTIK-MED performs the additional correction free of charge. For how long? fter the FEMTO (IntraLasik) and the LBV® (Laser Blended Vision) treatment, the fight against repair cells is considerably shorter, because the correction of the error was not done on the surface of the cornea. 3 weeks of using the eye drops, with a tapering intensity, is usually enough. After the PRK treatment, it typically takes 6 months for the repair cells to give up fighting. After this period, they stop trying to restore the faulty shape of the cornea, and consider the treated cornea the new status quo to be protected. It is good to know, that from then on, repair cells invest the same amount of energy to protect the clear vision achieved by the treatment.Using the eye drops after the treatment also protects the eyes from infections and inflammation. The dosing of the eye drops may vary individually. This is why it is important for you to come to the prescribed follow-up assessments so both you and your ophthalmologist can follow and monitor the development of your visual acuity. The medical warranty is only valid if you come regularly to the follow-up assessments. Why do you need sunglasses? After the laser treatment, UV light stimulates the activity of the repair cells in the cornea, which work to restore the pre-treatment state, that is, to prevent achieving the best possible visual acuity. We can easily avoid this by wearing sunglasses. For how long? After the FEMTO (IntraLasik) and LBV® (Laser Blended Vision) treatment, you only need increased protection against UV light for 2 months. After the PRK treatment, wearing sunglasses is recommended for 6 months. However, even untreated people should wear sunglasses fend off UV light. When to wear it?
